Special Requests

Last week was Heather’s birthday and her only special requests were that we do a low-key, intimate dinner and for it to be gluten and meat-free.  We were happy to oblige, being that she is one of our nearest and dearest friends.  So we had a bit of a challenge on our hands since we love our bread and gluten, but we’ve been meaning to try a vegan/gluten-free week soon so this was a good test.  The dinner was successful and very grown-up, a small dinner party in our make-shift dining room.

Special Guest Food Adventure: Lana Kim

Summer here in New York is hot and humid, and to any West Coaster like Lana Kim it could feel like hell.  The famed Lana from The Lana Show, a funny online videocast where she interviews different musicians from Blonde Redhead to Fat Lip to Girl Talk about their favorite music videos.  She’s also the head of music videos at The Directors Bureau and not only that, she’s also in the rockin’ band J-Lep. But best of all, Lana is one of a kind and one of the most amazing people you’ll ever meet. Phew, that’s a whole lot.  She came out for a short visit during one of the hottest and most humid days but of course that didn’t stop us from trekking out to Crown Heights for a Food Adventure!  Why Crown Heights?  Because we had to try Peaches for some good Southern cookin,’ and because we love their sister restaurant, the Smoke Joint.

Special Guest Food Adventure: Joel Speasmaker at Good Fork

By now, you all know our honorary NumNum’er Joel Speasmaker of Forest Design.  He has been on many of our food adventures in addition to taste testing several of our at home eats.  So it was only fitting that we ask Joel to his own food adventure, and he chose The Good Fork in Red Hook, Brooklyn.  We took Bryn along for the ride, being that its one of her favorite restaurants.

The Good Fork serves high quality, seasonal foods without the snooty attitude.  Its actually all about comfort, from the staff, to the atmosphere, and most importantly, to the food.

love, philly

A couple weeks ago, we decided to have an impromptu trip down to Philly.  We’ve been hearing great things about the food and drinks, and boy did we eat and drink.  This trip was one big ole’ food adventure.  We ended up coming back to New York with the biggest raw oyster obsession AND a new love for Philly.

Mussel Beach

We love to dream… and while day dreaming we dreamt of eating al fresco by a Parisian Café  with a bowl full of mussels and a freshly baked baguette. Especially after our post on the French Cookbook, “I Know How to Cook,” we knew we wanted to revisit the Mussels section but without the heavy weight of butter that the cookbook calls for.  This delectable dish is made with a tomato and clam broth with a nice kick of spice to it.  The baguette that is completely necessary for a dish like this is used to sop up all the juicy goodness.  Best of all, this dish was cheap and easy!  Mussels really don’t cost that much and are fairly easy to prepare, so never fear and dream away with us. Bon Apettit! Continue reading Mussel Beach…

tikka tikka!

We, Numnum girls, love a little spice in our lives.   Something with a kick, a zing, or a zow, which is why when we opened up last month’s Martha Stewart and noticed the Shrimp Tikka Masala and Toasted-Coconut Rice our mouths did a little jump kick to our brain.

Surprisingly this recipe was super easy, for some reason curries always intimidate me but this was uncomplicated and equally tasty.  Although, Martha’s recipe calls for a little too much Garam Masala, in my opinion, which is why I would put in less the next time around.  And I can assure you, there will be a next time.

Guest Food Adventure: Jillian Tamaki at Sel de Mer

Jillian Tamaki is one kick-ass illustrator and she happens to be a kick-ass person as well, which in our minds, made her the perfect partner for our newest special guest food adventure! She’s the artist behind the awesome graphic novel Skim and she’s also published a book of collected illustrations called Gilded Lilies. You’ve probably seen her work in The New York Times, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, or The New Yorker, just to name a few. Originally from Calgary, Canada, she currently lives here in Brooklyn, NY, with her talented husband Sam Weber (who also joined us for dinner along with our honorary NumNum partner Joel Speasmaker). Since she’d read about Sel de Mer (347 Graham Avenue, Brooklyn) in New York mag, and had passed it running errands in the neighborhood, she picked this newish Williamsburg seafood spot for our culinary adventure and we, of course, didn’t object.
