These fruits are made for eatin’

ts

Most of us know by now that a tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable. But if you’ve been getting tomatoes at the grocery store as opposed to the farmer’s market, they don’t taste like either. In fact, they barely taste like anything at all. But the tomatoes that come from a farmer are oh so sweet. And luckily, heirloom tomatoes are plentiful at the farmer’s market this time of year, but the end of this bounty’s in sight so I’m eating them up as if there’s no tomorrow. You can bite into an heirloom like it’s an apple and still have a delicious experience but this easy recipe for an heirloom salad really brings out the amazing flavors. And isn’t it pretty? Well, guess what…it tastes even better than it looks.

I think illustrator Gemma Correll is a kindred spirit (see above). At least as far as donuts are concerned.

I’ll cheers to that!

Every Sunday, we like to sit down and share a drink with those devilishly, handsome Ad Men of Mad Men. Particularly Don Draper, oh yes…  Even to get tipsy with Peggy Olson, what fun that would be.  So we decided to try out a couple of cocktails from the AMC cocktail guide.

Tom Collins was first on our list, mainly because we love Hendricks Gin. Continue reading I’ll cheers to that!…

bar none

balboa bar

I’m sure it’s pretty clear by now that I’ve got a serious sweet tooth. I talk about cookies and cupcakes the way other people talk about babies and puppies. Whenever I go back to California, my to-eat list is a mile long (topped by In-N-Out, obvz), but when I head to Newport Beach to hang with my grandparents, my culinary mission is single-minded: get me a Balboa bar, and STAT. For the uninitiated, this all-star of boardwalk food begins as a block of creamy vanilla ice cream, which is pulled from the freezer and ceremoniously dipped in melted chocolate that hardens as it cools (the really great places dip it twice). It’s then rolled in the topping of your choice: crushed peanuts, coconut, Oreo crumbs, or the only one that truly matters, rainbow sprinkles. It is heaven on a stick my friends, and since I spent the last week lounging on the beach in southern California, I made sure to get my fill. It my be the sweet taste of nostalgia that makes Balboa bars taste so good to me, but there’s only one way to find out: get yourself to Balboa Island and try one for yourself!

Food to our ears

So many food adventures…and this one leads us up to Greenpoint. Eat Records (124 Meserole b/w Leonard & Eckford) is a small record shop and great eatery. I remember going here a couple years back when it was WAY different and kinda peculiar. It was literally a record store full of characters like in High Fidelity but with a cafe that served “food.” I put “food” in quotes because it seemed like when you ordered something, they’d go out and get it from another place and bring it back to serve it to you. All in all, it was a strange place, but now, it’s a whole new story and boy, is it amazing!

Pie, Oh My!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently.  We’ve been falling behind BUT fall is here which only means food to fatten us up for winter warmth and more cozy home time which means more posts!

But before summer ends,we stopped by Blue Stove Bakery (415 Graham Ave) after our trip out to Caffe Capri which is right down the street.  And boy, this place has the goods and is as cute as can be.

The place is decorated with vintage wares, mason jars, old school pie pans.

And on to the pies (oh my!)…  A tip when going out to try treats, take friends so you have more choices to try!

iced capades

With iced-coffee season drawing to a close (sniff.), we thought we’d better partake in the best Brooklyn has to offer before fall really settles in. So we high-tailed it to Caffe Capri (427 Graham Ave.) in Greenpoint. If you’ve been to this funny little gem you know all about its authentic Italian kitschiness, it’s quaint square tables and wicker chairs, and the super nice family that owns it, one member of which will customize your iced coffee by asking the following succint questions: “Sugar?” and, “Light, medium, or dark?” (Which of course refers to your preferred amount of milk.) Don’t bother reaching for a straw, you’ll get a friendly, impassioned lecture about how their coffee, which is kept cold with slivers of crushed ice as opposed to large cubes (I think that’s key to the magic!), cannot be fully experienced without sipping it straight from the cup. Which gets soggy real quick so suck it down fast (I’m pretty sure that won’t be a problem.)

IMG_2017This sign reminds me of that scene in Elf. You know the one.

IMG_2020Oh, iced coffee, be still my heart. I’m not ready to give you up. Summer…please don’t go!!
