Food Adventure: Bark in Brooklyn
If you’re a fan of hot dogs who happens to live in Brooklyn, then Bark is the place for you. Actually, even if you hate hot dogs, I’d bet a white birch beer soda you’d like the ones they serve up here. As former vegetarians, we went for a number of years without eating a hot dog and even when we came back to the meat, hot dogs weren’t anywhere near the top of the list of things we couldn’t wait to taste again (they were completely crowded out by chicken wings, pulled pork, and just about anything involving bacon). But after a bite at Bark, they’re back up there (and the fries! Oh, the fries.)
We dug into the Bark dog, which was topped with housemade sweet relish (delish!) along with onions and mustard, and the chili cheese dog which was smothered with goodness (though the Bark dog took the lead in our taste test). We also couldn’t pass up the cheddar fries which were perfectly rich and salty. I’ll be honest, it kind of hurts to pay 5+ bucks for a dog, but when you look at the big picture, that’s a pretty cheap splurge. And I guess we can’t fault them…when all of your ingredients (save the Heinz ketchup and mustard) are locally sourced, you gotta pay for it somehow. Bark’s warm wood interior is stacked with communal tables, so be ready to get to know your neighbors. (We met some lovely people from New Haven who were there strictly because Martha Stewart recommended it. Pretty sure they were drunk. It was 2 in the afternoon. Kind of amazing.) But make sure they get their own cheese fries.
