Special Guest Food Adventure: Lana Kim

Summer here in New York is hot and humid, and to any West Coaster like Lana Kim it could feel like hell.  The famed Lana from The Lana Show, a funny online videocast where she interviews different musicians from Blonde Redhead to Fat Lip to Girl Talk about their favorite music videos.  She’s also the head of music videos at The Directors Bureau and not only that, she’s also in the rockin’ band J-Lep. But best of all, Lana is one of a kind and one of the most amazing people you’ll ever meet. Phew, that’s a whole lot.  She came out for a short visit during one of the hottest and most humid days but of course that didn’t stop us from trekking out to Crown Heights for a Food Adventure!  Why Crown Heights?  Because we had to try Peaches for some good Southern cookin,’ and because we love their sister restaurant, the Smoke Joint.

What better way to cool down than freshly squeezed Lemonade, each one specially made for you by your waitress/waiter.  Its no joke, each one is specially made.  Perfectly tart, perfectly sweet, perfectly thirst quenching.

We both decided to get the Shrimp Po’ Boy Sandwich, Lana got the Sweet Potato Fries and I got the Barbecue Fries.  There isn’t anything better than fries than getting 2 varieties in one meal.  The shrimp was tastily fried and they didn’t skimp on the shrimp, a plus!  The sandwich had a delicious chipotle-like mayo which gave it a nice kick.

Lana insisted that a food adventure was not complete without dessert so we were forced to get the Brownies a la mode.  Really, like pry my mouth open and force fed.  Who am I kidding, it was so delicious you had to stop me from licking the plate.

Food Talk with Lana Kim

1. Since you’ve travelled many places, where and what is the most amazing thing you’ve had?

A giant peach in Japan. Actually all the food I’ve had in Japan has been amazing, but this peach was especially memorable.

2. What is your go-to restaurant in Los Angeles?

Potato Tacos at Senor Fish in Eagle Rock!!!!!

3. We heard you like to make foods of “different” proportions? tell us the smallest and biggest thing you’ve made.

I’ve baked tiny loaves of bread. I also made tiny pancakes using a super tiny whisk, ladle, and spatula that my brother got for me for Christmas one year (I can take a photo of the little cooking set later when I get home).

(this is a photo of Souther’s hands, not mine – my nails aren’t that dirty). It shows better scale then when I hold it (below).

I’ve dreamt about making a really HUGE peanut butter and jelly sandwich since I was a kid, but haven’t yet.

4. Why don’t you like to cook for yourself?

I can’t really explain it. One of my favorite things to do is to sit and watch other people cook, but it’s not natural for me to want to do it myself.

5. Any food obsessions?

The weird part is, even though I don’t like to cook for myself, I LOVE to bake.  I know that doesn’t make sense, but that’s how it is. I was really into baking chocolate Amish friendship bread for awhile.  I would get all excited when the 10th day came and the yeast was ready to bake and share. My house would smell INCREDIBLE while baking.  But then I did it a couple too many times, ran out of friends to give it away to, and I got tired of eating it.

I really love good granola and yogurt with some frozen blueberries and bananas. It’s my breakfast almost every morning.

  2. I wish Peaches were in Crown Heights, but it’s not! (It’s to the north of CH in Bed-Stuy, or Stuyvesant Heights to be more exact.)
